Any old gun can be restored to a beautiful finish with a little tender love and care. Many guns will actually look much better than brand new! It's easy, and makes a great cold or rainy day project to do indoors.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need:
steel wool pads
stain (if desired)
clear gloss polyurethane
coat hanger or wire
Remove stock from gun where possible. This isn't totally necessary, but helps to make work easier and avoid endangering metal barrel and components.
The old finish is removed fairly easily with steel wool. Be sure to remove all the finish to ensure a beautiful end result. Try to resist the temptation of resorting to sandpaper. The sandpaper will leave scratches in the wood, whereas steel wool leaves wood smooth. However, any heavy scratches that penetrated the original finish and scratched into the wood can be worked with sandpaper if necessary.
